If you’ve thought about becoming an acupuncturist or now getting more serious about checking out how to become an acupuncturist, there are a few things you should know. Make sure that inserting needles into bodies won’t be a problem for you. Then you may want to think about which of the acupuncture schools would be the best fit.
First of all you want to check out your state’s licensing requirements. Unfortunately you can’t rely on the Internet for this because states make changes in their licensing requirements and Web sites are often not updated with this information. So check directly with your state licensing division. Ask specifically what licensing you need, if any. If you have any naturopathic or acupuncture schools in your area, call them, of course they will know too.
Next you want to check out the best acupuncture schools in your area. They may be acupuncture schools that offer only the classes you’ll need to take to get your degree. Or it may be a naturopathic school. Or you may want to check with the counselors at your local schools, colleges and universities and see what classes, courses or programs they offer.
Most schools who specialize in acupuncture and Oriental medicine offer a two, three, four or five-year program. You would be attending full time and taking classes like anatomy and physiology, biology, body therapy, massage therapy, psychology, other sciences and sometimes Chinese herbology. Some colleges will require some prerequisites to these classes.
Now this is important. You want to make sure your college or acupuncture school is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental medicine (ACAOM). This designation is important because when you take the test for certification through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, who make up the test, they will require your school or acupuncture school to be approved by the ACAOM. The test is taken before you graduate.
You can apply for federal student loans but make sure that your school is accredited by the ACAOM to get approved.
If you select an acupuncture school for your training over a two or four year college or university there are some additional benefits. The schools will let you consult with the teachers about specific issues that come up with your patients. Also you want to try to pick a school with smaller classes for more one-to-one time with the instructor.
Pursuing a career as an acupuncturist is an excellent choice and acupuncture is one of the fastest growing areas in health care. Many health insurance companies are approving acupuncture on health insurance claims. You can work on your own in your own practice get a job in the field or work under a licensed physician or naturopathic physician. Some acupuncturists even work from home.
