The field of nursing has professionals performing varying tasks that involve working with other nurses, doctors, and of course patients. Students have many career training possibilities that teach them to work as a general nurse or a specialized nurse. Colleges offer a variety of program choices depending on the students needs.

Taking vital signs, monitoring patients, administering shots, addressing wounds, and performing lab tests are all tasks that are performed by a nurse. Training encompasses all these areas by providing students with multiple educational options. Licensed practical nurse (LPN) and registered nurse (RN) degree programs are the two main training options students can enter. Many students that have already completed an LPN or RN degree can choose to work through programs that are designed to advance their skills and clinical experience, which are called bridge programs. LPN’s can work through an LPN-to-RN degree. RN’s can complete an RN-to-Bachelor of Nursing degree program and BSN’s can continue education inside a BSN-to- Master of Nursing degree program.

LPN programs generally last one year and students are taught how to perform specific duties inside healthcare facilities. This form of medical professional schooling focuses on preparing students to fulfill their job requirements as assistants to RN’s. Recording vital signs, taking blood pressures, dressing wounds, and performing laboratory tests are some overall skills students learn in a typical program.

RN programs teach students to care for patients in many ways. Students learn through centralized coursework to administer medications, injections, and treatments. Many healthcare training programs provide students with a specialization in a certain area of the field like pediatrics or cardiology that can be entered at this level. Working through a four-year RN program is the traditional starting point for many students that have the desire to become registered nurses.

Working through a bridge program takes students work experience and combines it with advanced clinical skills. LPN’s wanting to become RN’s should consider enrolling in an LPN-to-RN associate’s program. Courses are focused on giving students a deeper understanding of the nursing field. Courses may include:

Professional Ethics
Adult Health Nursing

Students gain the appropriate knowledge to work alongside doctors and have the leadership skills to oversee LPN’s in the workplace.

The next educational step available to students is the RN-to-BSN program. Students learn a broad range of medical skills at an advanced level. Many programs are clinical heavy meaning students spend a lot of time working with patients and doctors inside a medical facility. Courses could include:

Advanced Statistics
Chronic Illnesses
Advanced Physiology

This level of education automatically raises the annual salary and gives students the knowledge to fulfill supervisory roles. Further education within a BSN-to-MSN program builds upon all nursing knowledge students have. The majority of career opportunities are available to students that have worked through a bridge program.

Whether students are aspiring nurses or current working professionals many career training possibilities are available. Students can find the right accredited nursing schools that fit their goals by exploring the different options from an LPN program to a MSN program. Full accreditation is provided by agencies like the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education to programs that offer students the quality education they need and deserve.
