Scholarships for single mothers returning to school after a gap or who are continuing their post-secondary education towards earning a degree are available from various sources, including government funds and non-profit organizations.  As a single mother, you know how difficult it can be to manage being a mother with classes and a job.  You are encouraged to strongly consider applying for the following financial assistance awarded by the government and by non-profit organizations.

You may have heard of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA as it is more commonly called.  The reason why you want to complete this free application is because you will be matched with financial assistance that meets your current needs.  You may become eligible for the Pell Grant, or grants that don’t have to be paid back.  Also, the FAFSA results will determine whether you qualify for subsidized Stafford and Perkins loans, which will give you a huge break on interest if you are forced to take out a loan.  Another benefit of the FAFSA is that most post-secondary schools will use your FAFSA results to match you to their own scholarship awards that they can grant you on a need-based case.

The Jeanette Rankin Foundation Scholarship Program awards scholarships to low-income women over the age of 35.  The scholarship can be used to help pay off any educational costs.  Eligibility requirements include being a U.S. citizen, being enrolled in an accredited school, pursuing a technical or vocational education, an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree, and be categorized in the low-income sector according to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Lower Living Standard.
